DOWNHAM TEAM EXCELLS AT SOUTH LINCS OPEN 2008
Our small but happy band of swimmers excelled themselves at the South Lincs Open on 3rd and 4th May. Led by Downham and Districts new coach Greg Marsters they had their first opportunity to swim with him in that capacity to see the results of Greg's first training cycle. As always the swimmers were trying to swim personal best times and at this meet they had the added challenge of finals. Add a couple of relays into the mix and some of them had a really busy weekend with a maximum of 12 swims. The squad managed 36 personal bests, with at least 16 of these being used to ease into finals.
Swimmers no of PB's
Kate Bell (8), Danielle Rayner (5), William Bell (5), Gemma Elsey (4), Laura Kenna (4), April Oliver (3), Jess Elsey (2), Abigale Whiting (2), Ben Marsters (1), Laura Kenny (1), Lucy Clift (1).
Placings
1st - 14, 2nd - 10, 3rd - 9, 4th - 9, 5th - 2, 6th - 3.

The above placings includes a 2nd overall to the Team Freestyle and in the Team Medley the latter resulted in a 1st team trophy place.
Ben Marsters swam 2 meet records in 100 Breaststroke and 100IM and also scooped the top Boy award for the 15/over category. Many of the swimmers not only took PB's in the heats but then managed a second PB in the Finals! A big well done for all who took part.

NEWSLETTER - May 2008
Firstly as a Club we would like to welcome aboard Greg, Lisa and all their family to our Swimming Club. We do hope they have settled in with us here and so far the results are already beginning to show with 48 PBs in the last 3 Galas alone!
Our first outing with Greg was at South Lincs Open Meet so we wish all of the team good luck! We will bring the results and report to you all in the June News letter!

Please keep a note of your swimming times as we will soon be posting names for the ASA awards and wish to be able to acknowledge the children's achievements here.

As many of you know we are now on the hunt for sponsorship for various roles within the Club. For some time the committee has appreciated the benefits that sponsorship would bring to DADS. We are currently developing a new Club Development Plan to bring this process into action. Sponsorship would improve our ability to provide specialist training and our drive to raise standards. It will enable us to buy more equipment, sponsor swimming galas and development days and provide kit for the Competitive Squad.

What's in it for you?

Apart from the satisfaction of supporting DADS, which provides around 100 members with the opportunity to swim regularly with expert tuition, for a modest investment, sponsors would gain by raising their profile locally.

There are numerous benefits:
"Branding on team kit * Advertising on the Clubs Notice board at the pool * publicity at Galas which attracts hundreds of people (participants and spectators) * Certificate of sponsorship for reception or boardroom * Logo and links with DADS website * DADS logo to be used on company letterheads * articles in local newspapers *

If you have any specific requirements, interests or would like to tailor your sponsorship marketing needs please discuss them with us. A potential sponsor or knowing someone who could help, please contact Clive, Amanda or Melanie or email directly to melpond@hotmail.com.
Thank you.

LOCAL GIRL DANIELLE RAYNER IS IN THE SWIM OF THINGS AT SWIMATHON 2008
LOCAL GIRL DANIELLE RAYNER IS IN THE SWIM OF THINGS AT SWIMATHON 2008 IN AID OF MARIE CURIE CANCER CARE

Danielle Rayner, an eleven year old schoolgirl at Downham Market High School, Downham Market has taken up the Swimathon challenge for 2008. Swimathon is the worlds largest fundraising event, taking place from the 17th - 20th April 2008, and aims to raise £1.8 million for Marie Curie Cancer Care and the Swimathon Foundation.

Danielle will be swimming 2.5KM at Downham Market Swimming Pool. She started with a goal of £100 and this has swollen to over £400 to help swimathon hit the £1.8 million mark. Danielle is encouraging fellow swimmers to join her and swim the challenge. For those who would prefer to cheer on from the sidelines, Danielle would love supporters to come along and root for her to help her complete the distance but also hopefully complete it in the fastest national time. Danielle competes and trains with the Downham and District Swimming Club Four nights a week and has a goal now to be the fastest in her age group nationally and possibly fastest to complete the challenge over all the age groups.

Duncan Goodhew, Olympic Gold Medallist and president of Swimathon, comments: 'Swimming is a great overall workout. It uses every muscle group in the body whilst burning more calories than other activities, such as running, and is one of the government's targeted sports to help reduce obesity. Swimathon is not only a great form of exercise for all, but a great team activity for friends, families and colleagues'.

Danielle says' I am thrilled to be participating in Swimathon 2008 and that the money I raise will help Marie Curie Cancer Care patients in my local area. It's great to know my efforts will be helping ease the lives of those who are so ill, especially as I didn't get to know one of my granddads through this horrible illness. It's my way to put something back into my community and remember my granddad.
I have been very lucky to have so much support from everyone and all of my sponsorship has been through word of mouth. I can be sponsored through the swimathon website on my page, should anyone also wish to help me'.

Swimathon 2008 is open to everyone; encouraging people to set there own personal challenge by accomplishing a distance choice. 1.5k, 2.5k or 5k. The 5k can also be swum as a team event with up to 5 people. Or if you prefer to set your own challenge join the SimplySwim challenge which allows you to swim any distance at any pool, any time.

Swimathon is taking place at over 500 pools nationwide from 17th - 20th April. If you would like to get involved in Swimathon 2008, go to www.swimathon.org to register and find out which of your local pools are participating, and help make this years events the biggest Swimathon ever!
